If you’re looking for a security camera to use outdoors, it’s important that you find the right kind of camera that can withstand harsh weather. Not using a suitable camera may have negative consequences like destroying your system or even electrocuting someone. One way to figure out how different CCTV cameras will fare outdoors is to look at the IP ratings.

Understanding IP Ratings

When we mention IP in this article, we are not referring to internet protocol; IP stands for Ingress Protection or International Protection. This is an international standard that defines what each electronic device is protected from when it comes to dust and liquids. CCTV IP ratings will consist of the letters “IP” followed by a 2-digit number. The first number refers to the camera’s protection from solid particles (dust) whereas the second number is their protection from liquids.

1st Digit: Protection From Dust

The rating for dust is measured on a scale from 0 to 6. The higher the number, the more protection:

  • 0: No protection
  • 1: Protection from solid objects over 50mm
  • 2: Protection from solid objects over 12.5mm
  • 3: Protection from solid objects over 2.5mm
  • 4: Protection from solid objects over 1mm
  • 5: Limited protection from dust
  • 6: Complete protection from dust

2nd Digit: Protection From Liquids

For liquids, the scale goes from 0 to 8. Like dust, the higher the number, the more protection:

  • 0: No protection
  • 1: Protection from dripping vertical water
  • 2: Protection from dripping water when tilted at 15 degrees
  • 3: Protection from water sprays at any angle up to 60 degrees
  • 4: Protection from water splashes
  • 5: Protection from low pressure water jets from all directions
  • 6: Protection from powerful water jets from all directions
  • 7: Protected from water immersion up to 1m in depth but only for 30mins
  • 8: Protected from continuous water immersion over 1m in depth

Any camera that has an IP rating of IP63 or below should be reserved for indoor usage. These cameras are not designed to withstand excessive dust and heavy rain so using these outside may cause breakage. IP64 cameras are suitable for outdoor use, but only if they are installed in a sheltered location since they can’t handle a lot of water contact besides some splashes. If you require a weatherproof camera, then you should opt to buy IP66+ cameras.
